Vision 2020: Supporting St. John's Mission Together

Message from Our Ministers and Vestry
We are GROWING! The mission and ministry of St. John’s is getting stronger and reaching far and wide. With the addition of Mary Beth, our new Curate, our Sunday School, youth programs, pastoral care and outreach activities will continue to flourish.

In our second year of the Vision 2020 Stewardship Appeal, we hope to attract wider and deeper participation from all our parishioners. Last year was an excellent start. We reached 85% of our two-year goal of increased pledging, the foundation of a healthy parish, but we need more families to participate. Your pledge allows us to rely on a steady income stream, so we can go about our work with confidence and ensure the stability of our endowment. If you have never given an annual pledge to the church, please prayerfully consider it.

Our Stewardship Campaign is “church speak” for contributing to the St. John's Annual Fund. The Vision 2020 Appeal for annual pledging supports everything we do together, our collective mission and ministry: the programs, services, and activities we all cherish.

From this little church by the pond, our beloved parish performs miraculous work together with God. Quam Dilecta! Thank you all for your continued dedication and support.

Seek and Serve

outreach-pic_287Through beautiful music and inspiring sermons, our compelling Worship Services invite us to live our lives more fully in relationship to God, and to one another.

Through Community Outreach, from Huntington to Haiti, we seek and serve Christ in all people, wherever we go.

HELP US SERVE!

img-8252_602Grow in Wisdom

We are guided by the “Three-fold Cord” of the Anglican tradition: SCRIPTURE + TRADITION + REASON
We nourish open hearts and nurture inquiring minds. Opportunities abound throughout the program year: Sunday School, Confirmation Class, Youth Group Mission Trips, Bible Study and Adult Education. We are never too old, or too young, to learn something new about ourselves or others!

HELP US GROW!

"Quam Dilecta!"

The founders of St. John’s Church chose “Quam Dilecta” as our motto. The opening words of Psalm 84 translates to: “How beloved are your dwelling places, O Lord of Hosts!"

To accomplish our work our beloved church needs ongoing support.

What is Vision 2020?

Last year, we initiated a new approach to reach a two-year goal of increasing pledged income. Traditionally, October is Stewardship Month, and this is when we launch the annual appeal so we may raise funds for the upcoming fiscal year. Pledges raised during Stewardship Month will help to fuel operations in 2020 which will allow our parish leadership team to manage the budget responsibly and support all our activities, programs and services sufficiently.

What do you mean when you say, “make a pledge?”

A pledge is a declaration of intent to donate a specific amount of money over a certain period. It’s not legally binding, but it is an important notification to the church of your intended annual financial commitment. It is any amount that is comfortable for you to commit during the calendar year.

Is pledging just another word for tithing?

Not exactly. Tithing originates from the Old Testament with Israelites giving 10 % of their crops and livestock to the temple. Some churches translate that to mean 10% of one's annual income. However, St. John's advocates for “proportional giving,” which means offering whatever you are comfortable donating in proportion to all you have been given. We ask you to consider all you have been given - your friendships, your family, your talent - and offer an expression of thanks to God and to St. John’s in proportion to the gifts you receive.

How can I pay my pledge?

It's easy! Fill out a pledge card and drop the envelope in the collection plate or mail it to the office. You can even pledge online through our website by visiting www.stjcsh/pledge. You may also contact Billy Wresch at [email protected]

Is it possible to pay my pledge with stock or securities?

Absolutely! For more information about this please contact Billy Wresch at [email protected] or click here for more information.

What is the significance of December 31?

St. John's operates on a January 1 to December 31 fiscal year. Our budget needs to be balanced by fiscal year’s end; therefore, all pledges need to be paid in full by then.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.
