Cemetery History

Memorial Cemetery was founded by John Divine Jones in 1862. This cemetery replaced the original cemetery located above the church. The original cemetery was a very difficult cemetery to work in and maintain. Many cemeteries from the 1830’s to the late 1880’s were designed as garden cemeteries. The first one being Mt. Notable Residents

There are many notable people who are interred or are descended from plot owners.

1) John Divine Jones Sec. 4

Founded the Memorial Cemetery in 1862. His estate is now the site of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Many insurance companies would not insure the US Navy ships because they feared heavy losses. John Divine Jones then insured the USN ships during the Civil War.

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.
