How Then Shall We Live?

Pledging to support St. John's in 2022.

Dear Members and Friends,

Perhaps, like me, you have spent much of last year seeking guidance from God on how to do everything.

Here are just a few examples of what’s changed because of COVID-19: My kids' school plans constantly changed. The way I shopped for family meals shifted. My understanding of what it means to be a parent was altered. I had to learn and relearn what it meant to be a priest in an online world. My patterns of travel, work and life were transformed. My heart was broken by the ongoing realites of grief and loss in so many domains of life. And my patterns of rest and refreshment shifted again and again.
Nothing was immune from the changing reality of COVID-19.

Now, as we all begin to emerge from the peak of the COVID-19 crisis, I find myself asking the same question: How then shall we live?

One thing for me is certain. In times like these I need to rely on my faith in God for guidance, support and refreshment and recognize that God is faithful to me in all ways. For this, I am incredibly thankful.

I hope you feel this way too.

What follows this letter is a report about all the ways that we as a church have tried to be faithful in the changing realities of this year. We hope you will pause with us to give thanks for all the ways St. John’s has faithfully responded to God’s invitation, through Christ, to seek and serve others, loving our neighbors as we love ourselves. We do that by offering compelling and beautiful worship, by supporting our families inside the church, by becoming more deeply connected to God and one another inside the church and outside it, by reaching out to our neighbors in need, and by caring for the incredible natural gifts of the pond, the harbor and the creation that God has placed in our care.

We invite you to join in supporting all that we do with a financial commitment or gift to St. John’s as an investment in our work of building healthy, holy and generous lives.

How then shall we live? With God’s help we will live and thrive together.

Yours,

Gideon

Our annual pledge appeal helps to support everything we do together, our collective mission and ministry: the programs, services, and activities that are integral to the quality of life we all value and cherish.

Over the past year St. John's has improved the lives of others and performed miraculous work together with God. Quam Dilecta! Thank you all for your continued dedication and support.

DOES THE CHURCH RECEIVE CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS?

Yes, the Church receives some Matching Gifts and this is an area we would like to grow. Corporate Matching Gifts are an excellent way to provide further support for the mission of St. John's Church, as many companies will match charitable contributions made by their employees. Please check with your Human Resources Department for guidance as to how the process works.

TO WHOM MAY I SPEAK WITH ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS?

Questions can be addressed to Treasurer Billy Wresch or either of our two wardens, Seamus Mitchell or Jeremy Bradford.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.
