Give to St. John's

Dear Friends,

I spent 15 years as a youth worker - 6 as a lay person, 9 as a boarding school chaplain. One thought persisted as a strategy for successful youth ministry. It came from an old, but beloved youth ministry curriculum once in use here at St. John’s and broadly across the church, the Journey to Adulthood. It was simply this: “If you are seeking after God, together we might find them.”

Seeking after God is one of the principle marks of Christian discipleship. Christians look for God, and find God, in all parts of life, but sometimes it helps to have company.

That’s what the church is for.

The church is the fellowship of those who seek to find Jesus in their lives. We are companions in life and in the spiritual journey. We feed our faith as we feed our spirits with fellowship, with music, with study, through generous acts of giving and serving, and, dependably, in worship together. If the past years have shown us anything, it is that our lives are precious, filled with purpose and meaning, and fragile. Companionship in this life is important. Companionship in our faith is essential.

There is a frequently quoted Kenyan proverb I first heard on an international service-learning trip some years ago which reminds us that “if you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.”

We are on a journey seeking God. It is not a fast journey, so let's make it together.

Your companion on the way,

Gideon

Your pledge allows us to rely on a steady income stream, so we can go about our work with confidence and ensure the stability of our endowment. If you have never given an annual pledge to the church, please prayerfully consider it.

Our Stewardship Campaign is “church speak” for contributing to the St. John's Annual Fund. The Vision 2020 Appeal for annual pledging supports everything we do together, our collective mission and ministry: the programs, services, and activities we all cherish.

From this little church by the pond, our beloved parish performs miraculous work together with God. Quam Dilecta! Thank you all for your continued dedication and support.

DOES THE CHURCH RECEIVE CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS?

Yes, the Church receives some Matching Gifts and this is an area we would like to grow. Corporate Matching Gifts are an excellent way to provide further support for the mission of Christ Church, as many companies will match charitable contributions made by their employees. Please check with your Human Resources Department for guidance as to how the process works.

TO WHOM MAY I SPEAK WITH ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS?

Questions can be addressed to Stewardship Chair Nina Muller, Treasurer Billy Wresch or either of our two wardens, Seamus Mitchell or James Wylie.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.

Like our lives, our church community is a gift from God we neither earn nor deserve, and yet, it is ours. We are responsible for caring for it, for nourishing it, and for participating in the ever outpouring gift of God's grace which we share through our actions together. We are stewards of these gifts for as long as we live, and we steward the gift of this church so that future generations will have the opportunity to receive God’s grace and put it into action.

Our whole life and ministry is “Grace in Action.”
