BlueGreen Theology

‘But ask the animals, and they will teach you;
the birds of the air, and they will tell you;
ask the plants of the earth, and they will teach you;
and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
Who among all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every living thing
and the breath of every human being.'
Job 12:7-10

St. John’s BlueGreen Theology ministry is dedicated to knowing, healing and sustaining the ecosystems in which we call home. We believe that the natural world is the setting in which, in this life, we come to know God. We believe that our call as Christians is into a relationship of balance and responsibility with creation.

In the story of creation (in the Book of Genesis) we encounter not explicit facts but deep truths. Our concern is less with how long it took and when it happened, than with the profound revelation that what has come to be is good...

"And God saw that it was good." Genesis

As stewards of our gifts, especially the beautiful surroundings of our church, we are compelled – by faith – to act in such a way as to serve them. The woods, the pond, the harbor, the sound and all that lives therein, these are also our brothers and sisters in Christ.

“How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?” 1 John 3:17

At St. John’s, with the help of our BlueGreen Theology committee, we have found many ways to help:

  • St. John’s Grow-to-Give Garden
  • The Laurel Hollow Shellfish Garden
  • Partnering with local agencies: The Friends of the Bay, The Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee, North Shore Land Alliance, and the Marine Department of the Cornell Cooperative Extension
  • Making pledges: CleanSeas, The Great Healthy Yard Project

Please join us in our efforts. Look for BlueGreen Theology events on our Facebook page and our Events & Calendar page.

News

St. John's Episcopal Church was the first religious institution to be established in Cold Spring Harbor. The first Episcopalian services were held in the little 18th century school house just above the site of the present church. The very first Vestry minutes, written in fine script on September 4, 1831, lists the founders who pledged $2,000 to build a new church.
