Support Victims of the August 2021 Haitian Earthquake
St. John’s support for Haiti is needed as urgently now after their most recent earthquake and tropical storms as ever.
We have heard from our partner priest, Michaud, that he and the church and school we have helped to build and support in Deslandes are safe from the immediate effects of the recent earthquake. But countless others in the country have not been so lucky.
Many have asked how they can support Haiti in this time. We wanted to pass along several suggestions that have come to us from our partners who are even more directly involved in this ongoing crisis than we are.
Partners In Health is a Boston-based nonprofit health care organization whose stated goals are "to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair. Partners in Health provides healthcare in the poorest areas of Haiti. They also remove barriers to maintaining good health, such as dirty water or a lack of food, and strengthen the rights of the poor. You can support their work in Haiti here.
Food For The Poor, Inc. is an ecumenical Christian nonprofit organization based in Coconut Creek, Florida, that provides food, medicine, and shelter, among other services, to the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean. They are our partners in the food program we support in Deslandes, and they also provide emergency food aid in crises like this one. You can support their work in Haiti here, or by making a contribution to our coordinated Diocesan response by sending a check to the church with “Food for the Poor” in the memo line.
Episcopal Relief & Development is an international relief and development agency of the Episcopal Church. It was established in 1940 as the Presiding Bishop's Fund for World Relief. Episcopal Relief & Development works in collaboration with church partners and other local organizations to facilitate healthier, more fulfilling lives in communities that are struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster and disease. They also work around the world and here in the US responding to and rebuilding after disasters. You can give to support their work in Haiti here.
Of course, we always welcome gifts of support for our fellowship with St. Mathias in Deslandes. To find out more about work in Haiti click here. To give through St. John’s in support of our Haitian partners go here.
