Summer is coming and it’s time for camp!
The St. John’s Day Camp, a partnership between St. John’s and the Town of Huntington, has been serving young children in the Huntington area for 54 years. It is one of our core Outreach Ministries.
A free six-week educational summer camp experience for children four to six years of age from low income homes, the program is designed to help preserve academic gains achieved during the school year. For the youngest campers, it is frequently their first academic experience before entering kindergarten.
This year, camp will be held at Washington Primary School and will run July 1-August 9. It is expected fifty children will participate. The three classes are teacher-led with support from counselors who often attended St. John’s Camp themselves.
Along with providing educational enrichment during a critical time in the children’s development, they also enjoy traditional camp fun! Trip highlights are The Children’s Museum and Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery with a picnic at St. John’s. The camp also provides transportation, breakfast, lunch and snacks for the children.
Volunteers Welcome!
Come inspire and be inspired by the children. Parishioners typically volunteer on Mondays but other days are possible. Read, play an instrument, bring an art or craft project or game to play. Do an age appropriate science or social studies activity. Share a talent or hobby. For example, lead the children in dancing, singing… share your interest. In previous summers, a parishioner who was a yoga instructor came and did yoga with the children. Another who loved gardening helped them plant their own seeds. All interests are welcome!
