The Body at Work
Two weeks ago this Sunday the epistle reading assigned was the passage from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians which centered on the image of the church as the Body of Christ. This image is an enduring and helpful image for understanding the church.
If you and I are members of one body with different functions, this weekend was a wonderful weekend of activity and action for “our body.” The different members were at work in different areas of mission, each exercising its own gifts for ministry. One part of our body helped to curate a beautiful art show now on display in Bleecker Hall which shows the talents inherent in our body of the church. Another part offered hospitality for the opening of that show. Yet another part of the body was at work in caring for our historic African American Cemetery on Harbor Road as a means of seeking understanding of our history and healing in our community. Yet another part of our body offered transcendent music in liturgy on Sunday morning. And another created and hosted a chili cook-off to build community, good will and raise funds to support creative ministry to our children and youth.
If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (1 Cor 12:26-27)
It was an extraordinary weekend in the life of St. John’s and I thank God for it.
