Safe Church In-Person Training at St. John's
Saturday, Jun 15, 9 am - 1 pm
Bleecker Hall
"The Diocese of Long Island intends that every parish congregation and every ministry be always places of community, learning, grace, insight, and caring. This begins by assuring that they are safe places: places where the vulnerable are protected from harm, and where all live and work with respect for one another. This beginning point aims toward an end point at which our gathering places for worship, community, and service are experienced as anticipations of the Kingdom of God."
The Diocese of Long Island requires that all Churches implement policies that establish standards of behavior and “best practices” for all clergy, church employees and adults who work with children and youth, and any vulnerable people. These policies known as Safe Church provide guidelines for the protection, safety and well-being of children, youth and adults involved in the life and ministries of churches.
St. John’s is currently conducting a Safe Church audit, coordinated by Vestry representative, Susan Collins, to determine our strengths as well as areas needing improvement in its Safe Church practices. As part of the audit, we are updating our Safe Church Guidelines which will clearly define the Safe Church training requirements for all groups, including: clergy, vestry, lay staff, volunteers, certain users of Church facilities; determining the Safe Church certification status for all individuals required to be certified, and providing training resources in order for everyone to certified by the early in the new Church year.
To that end, we are offering in-person Safe Church training at St. John's Church on Saturday, June 15, from 9 am - 1 pm. This in-person training is open to EVERYONE: those requiring first-time certification, and anyone wishing to renew their Safe Church certification (certification must be renewed every 5-years). Registration is required by the Diocese of Long Island, so please email [email protected] to express your interest in attending this training.
Any questions should be directed to Susan Collins, Safe Church Vestry Representative at [email protected].
