Choral Evensong for Saint Michael and all Angels
5 pm, Sunday, September 29, 2024
St. John’s, Cold Spring Harbor
On Sunday, September 29, 2024, St. John’s Clergy and Choir will offer a special evening service of Evensong, or Sung Evening Prayer. Please join us for a short service (about 45 minutes) which features choral music, scripture readings, and prayers. The brief service, which contains no sermon or homily, is a contemplative way to end the week.
Traditionally the special music featured in Evensong includes psalm settings, canticles - in particular the Magnificat or Song of Mary and Nunc Dimittis or song of Simeon, as well as special anthems. This special music all interwoven with scriptures from the Old and New Testaments, the Apostles' Creed, Lord's Prayer, and other prayers and hymns.
This service is a special offering to our community to mark the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels also known as Michaelmas. The feast is traditionally celebrated on September 29 to celebrate St. Michael and All Angels: namely the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael (and sometimes) Uriel). Michael is particularly honored for defeating the devil in the war in heaven (Revelation 12:7-12).
Please join us for this special service!
