150th Anniversary Diocesan Convention
This past Thursday through Saturday, the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island, of which St. John’s is a part, held their 150th anniversary convention in Uniondale. The convention is the annual family meeting of the diocese which gathers all resident clergy and delegates from every congregation to take council for the future mission of the church in the coming year. It is also a time to review progress on initiatives the diocese has undertaken in the past year. The Diocese took up subjects as wide ranging as the #MeToo movement in our culture and in our church, to peace on the Korean peninsula as well as the spiritual health and well-being of our diocese.
This year was also a banner year as we were joined in convention by the Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, the Most Rev. Michael Curry. Bishop Curry is a stunning preacher and a thoughtful and wise leader in the church. His presence and preaching among us buoyed our spirits and provided great focus to our ministry together. Convention ended with a festive Eucharist with a pan-diocesan choir, steel drums, beautiful vesture and a rousing sermon from our Presiding Bishop all in a tent that lent a “revival” feel. Dan Barbiero participated in the choir representing all of us.
St. John’s was ably represented by three outstanding lay delegates Sue Collins, Vasana Hildebrand and James Wylie as well as by your clergy. Attached are some photos of the celebrations.
